She and Her Cat | By Makoto Shinkai, Naruko Nagakawa

Title: She and Her Cat
Author: Makoto Shinkai, Naruko Nagakawa
Translator: Ginny Tapley Takemori

The collection “She and Her Cat” consists of four linked short stories about women and their “unique” relationships with their cats. I find it odd, yet a deep and sweet book. I believe that it sometimes misses the mark… Personally, I am not fond of the way Chobi romantically viewed his owner. I feel that the bond between a cat and its owner goes beyond romantic connection, and likening it to one not only seems a bit strange to me but also detracts from its unique nature, distinct from human relationships. Treating Chobi’s emotions as those of a love story only misses the real point on display in this relationship. However, this might just be my perspective, maybe a misinterpretation on my part? Or possibly a nuance lost in translation.

I welcomed my first cat when I was 10, naming him “Budong” after a character from “Super Inggo,” a Filipino TV series. Following the passing of my grandmother, who was like a second mother to me, it was a devastating time that drained my hope and left me feeling broken. It was not perfect; it was my rollercoaster time, but Budong allowed me to re-establish the lost hope. He became my source of comfort and joy, guiding me back to myself and allowing me to express love amidst sorrow. Taking care of him taught me valuable lessons about love, compassion, and purpose. Budong’s presence brought structure and routine into my life, showing me the depth of my ability to care for another being. Despite being just a cat, he played a significant role in my life, sparking a lasting love for felines.

READ ME: If Cats Disappeared from the World

Overall, this book is heartwarming and reassuring to read. Even if you don’t have a furry friend, it can still inspire and touch you profoundly. Pets are genuine lifesavers, and as cliché as it may sound, sometimes you save them, but most of the time, they save you. <3 :)
