I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki | By Baek Se-hee

Title: I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki
Author: Baek Se-hee
Translator: Anton Hur

I find it challenging to rate non-fiction, particularly the ones with plain and straightforward stories. This isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I can say it somehow works for me. It’s a well-crafted story about mental health which is authentically honest and devoid of pretentiousness. It doesn’t claim to be a self-help or provide a one-size-fits-all solution to all struggles. However, what it does achieve is making you feel understood. It felt like reading thoughts shared by a friend who is undergoing therapy, giving the reader some free therapy too. Was I able to relate – a good part of it, maybe? and I hope others can find solace in this too. Whether you’re, at your ebb or feeling like life is unbearable, I hope that you can still find something that keeps you going, no matter how small it may be – whether it is enjoying fireworks with your loved ones or eating spicy tteokbokki on a Sunday evening!

READ ME: Frozen Tears | By Lina Aziz

READ ME: If Cats Disappeared from the World

My key takeaway from her story is how to cherish and express one’s emotions towards others. To share your feelings with people you trust has always seemed right to me. You create deep relationships when you confide in someone you know well, probably somebody close to your heart in particular, hence lightening yourself from such burden thereby strengthening the bond with them. :)
